The launch of Business as an Instrument for Societal Change: In Conversation with the Dalai Lama took place on the 10th September at the Power & Care (A Mind & Life Dialogue with His Holiness the Dalai Lama) in Brussels. The author of the book, Sander Tideman, presented a copy to HH the Dalai Lama, who commented:

“Of course, this is very good. We need to bring compassion into business; compassion is the best motivation for any activity in the world. It benefits others as well as yourself, including your business”.

While forthcoming on other humanitarian and environmental issues, the Dalai Lama rarely speaks directly on the topics of business, leadership and economics.

There is something hard and cold about borders and boundaries. Something exclusive, cutting-off and leaving out, separating the “us” and “them”. What if that was a way of operating that was simply outdated? Let us look at an alternative operating mode: one that builds on inclusion and cooperation and expresses itself through dilemmas and tensions, which need to be figured out, one step a time.

We live in a world of boundaries – a term that can be defined in many ways:

  • A dividing line.
  • A point or limit that indicates where two things become different.
  • Frontiers inviting exploration and development.

Some boundaries appear on maps as divisions between countries.   Others are physical, such as fences or walls.  In recent years technology has removed many of the boundaries that separated us in the past.  However, internal or psychological boundaries seem to have become more entrenched now than ever before.  And since boundaries of any type can enrich or imprison us, the question I am exploring this month is this:  How can we ensure that the boundaries which frame us are generative rather than limiting?

Responsible Investment in Emerging Markets: Priorities for Action

In recent years, investors have argued that “responsible investment” allows investors to maximise the financial and social benefits of their activities, and, simultaneously, to mitigate the negative impacts of their investments. As yet, however, little has been written in the practitioner or in the academic literature about the responsibilities of investors in emerging markets, about the practicalities of implementing responsible investment in emerging markets, or about the outcomes (financial and social) that result.

The latest issue of the Journal of Corporate Citizenship addresses this gap in the literature by presenting a series of major articles that analyse the implications, for investors and for society, of investors seeking to take a more responsible approach to their investments. The articles highlight the potential contribution of foreign investment to economic development and to wider society (e.g. through skills development, local economic development, local employment). They also explain that foreign investment is not unambiguously positive for developing countries, with many such investments being criticised for their negative impacts on local communities and the local environment, for the lack of local benefits and for their volatility.
